Meeting Held to Strengthen Cervical Cancer Screening System in Cambodia
On August 14, 2025, the Ministry of Health convened a Meeting on the Expansion of Colposcopy, Thermal Ablation, and LEEP Procedures for Cervical Cancer Screening at the Subnational Level.
The meeting was chaired by H.E. Prof. Tung Rathavy and attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Health, representatives from national hospitals, and development partners including the World Bank and the World Health Organization.
Discussions focused on challenges and measures to strengthen the service delivery system for an effective cervical cancer screening program. Key points included:
・Clarifying the screening, triage and treatment pathway: Defining where women can receive initial screening (HPV testing), and specifying the locations and procedures for triage and treatment if the result is positive.
・Reducing patient burden and improving follow-up rates: Identifying strategies to minimize travel and treatment costs, thereby reducing the number of women who discontinue HPV screening, triage and treatment.
・Defining the roles of health facilities: Establishing functional roles between referral and provincial hospitals, and expanding the capacity to provide colposcopy, thermal ablation, and LEEP procedures.
It was also confirmed that enhancing the skills of doctors and midwives is essential for the smooth expansion of the services. The following measures were discussed:
・Development of a clinical manual for colposcopy, thermal ablation, and LEEP.
・Development of training curriculum and materials for acquiring necessary knowledge and skills.
To ensure the effective implementation of these measures, participants agreed to hold similar meetings to further elaborate on the specific methods for training implementation. NCD Control Project will continue to work alongside MoH in this process.
