Workshop Held on the Appropriate Selection and Use of Medicines for Diabetes and Hypertension

On August 6, 2026, the Project organized a Workshop at the Kampong Cham Provincial Health Department on the appropriate selection and use of medicines for diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Yasunori Ichimura, JICA Short-term Expert, served as the lecturer. Doctors and nurses working at NCD clinics in provincial and district referral hospitals attended the workshop.

A Diabetes Service Assessment conducted at Kampong Cham Provincial Hospital in 2025 identified a significant room for improvement in blood glucose control and complication prevention among diabetic patients. Cambodia’s clinical guidelines recommend initiating insulin therapy when oral medications alone do not adequately control blood glucose levels. However, challenges related to implementation and routine use have prevented insulin therapy from being widely used in many hospitals.

Based on the Ministry of Health's updated "Guidelines on the Treatment and Care of Patient with Type 2 Diabetes for Referral Hospitals 2026" and "Guidelines on the Treatment and Care of Hypertension in Adults for Referral Hospitals 2025", the workshop provided lectures and case studies on appropriate medicine selection for appropriate blood glucose control and complication prevention. Participants deepened their practical knowledge of selecting oral medications, deciding when to initiate insulin therapy, adjusting doses, and educating patients on lifestyle modifications and self-injection techniques.
