Discussion/Exchange of opinions with the Thai General Insurance Association (TGIA)
On July 8, 2025, the project experts visited the Thai General Insurance Association (TGIA) to exchange views on the handling of salvage vehicles and insurance systems for electric vehicles (EVs).
In Thailand, vehicles are classified as “total loss” if they are deemed beyond repair or if the repair cost exceeds 70% of the vehicle’s market value. Such vehicles are typically disposed of through auctions by insurance companies. However, there are currently poor rules regarding the deregistration process or the management of parts distribution, and tracking conducted after dismantling is incomplete.
Regarding EVs, concerns were raised about the high cost of repairs and spare parts, as well as the lack of repair facilities and parts supply, which may lead to an increase in early vehicle retirement. In particular, battery replacement often accounts for a significant portion of a vehicle’s value, making insurance coverage more challenging.
Moving forward, we will continue discussions on developing realistic systems suited to Thailand’s circumstances, while referencing examples from Japan and other countries.
