News#23 Seminar on Suitability of CDR for SIMPUT-Maputo Dashboard (October 2025)

The METRAP-Maputo team developed the SIMPUT-Maputo dashboard to effectively monitor the progress of SIMPUT-Maputo projects. The dashboard needs to be continuously updated with the latest travel demand data. The project utilizes Call Detail Records (CDR) to visualize and analyze people’s movements. Personal information of CDR is anonymized and aggregated as statistical data. A dedicated CDR dashboard has been created to visualize people's mobility and overlay with the proposed SIMPUT-Maputo projects. To support the use of CDR data and maintain the dashboards, METRAP-Maputo JICA experts provided several training sessions to project stakeholders.

In addition to the intensive four-day technical training on CDR held in March 2025, the JICA expert team organized a seminar on October 7, 2025. The JICA expert provided a presentation focusing on the importance of operating and maintaining the CDR dashboard and utilizing CDR effectively for SIMPUT-Maputo projects. Participants included technicians from the National Institute of Communications of Mozambique (INCM), DMTT, AMT, as well as representatives from JICA Mozambique Office, JICA Headquarters in Tokyo, and METRAP-Maputo JICA Experts.

After the JICA Expert's presentation, Professor Ryosuke SHIBASAKI, a researcher and CDR application expert in various fields, delivered a lecture titled “Sustaining Mobile Data Analysis for Social Good.” He is a professor and Vice President at Reitaku University and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. He is also a Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. His lecture explained the use of CDR in various fields, such as disaster behavior analysis, official statistics collection, space-time analysis, mapping people flow and trip patterns, and socio-benefit applications including analyzing the spread of Ebola and malaria. Professor SHIBASAKI also highlighted the role of smartphone applications in conducting surveys for big data collection and the sustainable use of collected CDR data.
