News#32 Training on Route Planning Dashboard utilizing CDR Data for EMTPM Officers (June 2026)

Based on the CDR dashboard1 developed in the second half of 2025, a route demand analysis tool, which visualizes transportation demand along bus and rail routes, is developed. By entering proposed routes and stations (bus stops) into this tool, users can visualize potential passenger volume along the route using CDR data and instantly identify potential demand between specific stations (bus stops). A key feature of this tool is that it can perform analyses in just a few minutes—a process that previously took years using existing transportation demand forecasting models—once the tool is developed. The tool was developed in collaboration with Mozambican government agencies, JICA experts, and LocationMind, a startup spun out of the University of Tokyo.

In June 2026, the JICA Expert Team conducted training on the route demand analysis tool for staff at the Municipal Public Transport Company of Maputo (EMTPM). The training covered practical topics such as setting up proposed bus routes, assessing potential demand at each stop based on those routes, analyzing origin-destination (OD) traffic between stops, and analyzing changes in potential demand by time of day.

This training program ensures that the technical skills necessary for data-driven public transportation planning are deeply embedded within the partner organization.
