Kick-off for a new Technical Cooperation Project for Better Quality Continuum of Care for Mothers and Children in Nepal

The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and JICA hosted the first Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting for “the Project for improving continuum of care for mothers and children through the utilization of maternal and child health handbook (The Nepal MCHHB Project)” on the 22nd of August 2025 at the Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC) Hall, within the MoHP premises, Kathmandu.

The 4-year project commenced in mid-April 2025 in collaboration between MoHP and JICA, aiming to develop an effective model to improve the provision of high-quality continuum of maternal and child health care services by introducing the integrated MCH Handbook (MCHHB). The project team visited Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces to engage key stakeholders and interact with health workers, Female Community Health Volunteers, and mothers.

The JCC meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Shree Krishna Shrestha, Additional Health Secretary of MoHP, and started with the remarks from Mr Mizuki Matsuzaki, Chief Representative of JICA Nepal Office. An overview of the project and the major progress were presented by Dr Kie Kanda, Chief Advisor of the project and Dr Gauri Pradhan, Project Manager, MNH Section Chief, Family Welfare Division (FWD). Dr Bibek Kumar Lal, Project Director, FWD Director, led a dynamic discussion on critical points, including sustainability, replicability, and scalability of the project, involving all the participants. The meeting concluded with decisions on the plans of activities, including pilot implementation sites in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. The project kicked off its first crucial step of the exciting journey for the health and well-being of all mothers and children in Nepal.
