JICA Chair 2026 - Innovating Maternal and Child Care: Building Pathways for Nepal’s MCH Improvement

The project participated in “JICA Chair” event, organized jointly by the JICA Nepal office, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), on January 29, 2026.

Prof. Dr. Masamine Jimba, Professor Emeritus, the University of Tokyo, provided the keynote speech titled “Three Decades of Maternal and Child Health in Nepal: Progress, Lessons, and the Road Ahead”. Ms. Keiko Osaki, Senior Advisor, Human Development Department, JICA Headquarters, presented “Global Discussions and Case Studies on Support for the Maternal and Child Health Handbook in various countries”. Dr. Kie Kanda, Chief Advisor, the Nepal MCHHB Project, introduced the ongoing technical cooperation to improve the continuum of care through utilization of MCH Handbook. From the Nepal academia, Prof. Dr. Kesang Diki Bista, Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Prof. Dr. Sudha Basnet, Head of the Department of Pediatrics, shared their clinical and research experiences in maternal and child health.

More than 100 participants from TUTH, IOM, professional bodies such as MIDSON, INGOs, UN agencies, including WHO and UNFPA, listened attentively to the deep insights from the speech and presentations.

We will continue our commitment and efforts to support healthier and happier lives for mothers and children in Nepal, guided and encouraged by the dedication of those who paved the way before us.
