Second Joint Working Group Meeting for colleges and hospitals: What kind of training is currently required for college lecturers and clinical nurses to improve the clinical practice environment?

Following the first Joint Working Group Meeting on 8th November 2022, the second Joint Working Group Meeting for colleges and hospitals was held on 16th February 2023. We held a workshop to discuss the knowledge and skills of college lecturers and clinical nurses, which are thought to be missing now, to derive specific training items.

The workshop was held in a total of three groups: a group including focal persons from colleges and hospitals (G1), a group of focal persons from colleges (G2) and hospitals (G3). G1 discussed the necessary knowledge and skills of college lecturers and clinical nurses to improve the clinical practice of nursing students. G2 discussed continuing professional development (CPD) of college lecturers, and G3 discussed CPD for clinical nurses. In the end, each group filled in the discussed information on the pre-made PPT template, and the representatives of each group gave presentations after the workshop.

From G1, the college lecturers raised the contents required before sending the nursing students to clinical practice, such as the student rotation plan and a monitoring system that includes evaluations. The clinical nurses discussed required knowledge when receiving the students, such as providing a ward orientation or practical training items on the ward for each grade student. In addition, the necessity of mentorship training and mental care for students was also taken up as a common item. From G2, we could see that there was a high level of interest in teaching methods, student guidance methods, and practice guidance methods as part of faculty development. From G3, we understand that there are requests for a wide range of items, such as ward management, nursing planning and nursing techniques, research activities and specialized nursing areas.

There were so many opinions that none of the groups could summarize all the discussions within the time limit. But finally, they were able to present their ideas, which was a good warm-up for considering future training content.

As we were preparing for this workshop, it became clear that in the syllabus of the BSc nursing course in Bangladesh, practical training items that nursing students should do at college are decided by the instructor in charge, and the number of hours for each item is not specifically indicated. We have observed college classroom lessons several times, but none of the students had textbooks and only wrote down what the lecturer explained orally. Even at the clinical training site, it is not clear for the clinical nurses what to teach the students. We would like to build a training program which reflects the workshop and supplements the knowledge and skills that are currently needed in the nursing field in Bangladesh.
