Events of International Nurses and Midwives Day

National Discussion Meeting was held on 8 June as a related event to the International Nurses Day on 12 May and International day of Midwives on 5 May. This event was organized by the Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), the counterpart of this project. The project participated in the event as a sponsor.

The Director General of DGNM, who is also the project director of our project, appeared on stage as a host and delivered a speech. The Director of the project, National Institute Of Advanced Nursing Education & Research(NIANER), also gave a presentation on the current situation, history, and challenges of nurses and midwives in Bangladesh. She addressed the importance of increasing the number of nurses by improving nursing education and training, and creating opportunities for nurses to take on leadership roles.

The Minister of MOHFW was the chief guest, and the Secretaries of the Health Services Division (HSD) and the Medical Education and Family Welfare Division (MEFWD) were invited as special guests. The Minister of MOHFW expressed his appreciation and importance of the nursing and midwifery professions and stated that MOHFW is working on curriculum revision in nursing and midwifery education to meet international standards.

The guests invited to the event were the Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, the Director General of the Directorate General of Family Planning, and guests from partner organizations, including the Embassy of Sweden, WHO, Canadian High Commissioner, UNFPA, JICA, and CBNS-II. The senior representative of JICA Bangladesh Office delivered a speech on stage, including a message to nurses and midwives in Bangladesh and an introduction of our project.

Almost 800 nurses, midwives, and nursing students gathered at the event, and several nursing colleges and institutes prepared booths to introduce their activities and display posters.

Through this event, we realized that there is a strong need for the training and quality improvement of nurses and midwives in Bangladesh and that various stakeholders are trying to respond to this need. Our project will also continue to make efforts to meet this need.
