Peer review on Disaster Health Management in Thailand

A peer review on Disaster Health Management (DHM) for ASEAN member states (AMS) was held in Thailand on February 1-2, 2023, with the aim of facilitating knowledge sharing and contributing to fostering a culture of mutual learning among AMS.

Peer review participants from AMS visited the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) and the National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEM), Thailand, to receive information about the DHM situation in Thailand including an overview of the Disaster Management and DHM systems, training and education system, safe hospital projects, as well as the management and coordination mechanism for Emergency Medical Teams (EMT).

The review was implemented based on the progress of the national-level targets of the Plan of Action to Implement the ASEAN Leaders' Declaration on Disaster Health Management (2019-2025) (POA/ALD DHM).

Following the explanation on the Country Analytical Work, the assessment on the current DHM status in Thailand, in line with the national targets of the POA/ ALD DHM, presented by former participants of the ASEAN Regional Training Course in Japan -Knowledge Co-creation Program (KCCP) 2022, the AMS peer review participants analyzed the current situation and discussed recommendations for further strengthening the DHM capacity of the host country.

Based on the review methodology used in Thailand, a tool for self-assessment and methodology for peer review in other AMS, which is planned to be implemented through the ARCH Project Phase2, will be developed.

The self-assessment is scheduled for late 2023, with the results used as base information for the peer review in 2024 and 2025, as well as shared during the KCCP 2023, and the Action Plans will be developed accordingly.
