Demonstration on Duckweed preservation technique(2023-07-07)

On 4 July and 5 July, short term experts*1 demonstrated two techniques which can be applied to create Duckweed holobiont collection.

> Dr. Tokitaka. Oyama (Kyoto Univ.): Simple cleaning method for wild Duckweed samples
> Dr. Shogo. Ito (Kyoto Univ.): Cryopreservation technique, an ultra-rapid cooling preservation method by liquid nitrogen enabling the duckweeds and coexisting microorganisms to be stored for a long term with vitrified state (glass–like solidification)

Duckweed species collected from different geographical locations have huge variations in their physiological properties, which is important for several practical applications. These demonstrated techniques are expected to be utilized to study and maintain many different duckweed clones of the same species (genetic resources of duckweeds) from different locations.
