[Nigeria] Supporting Health Care and Health in the 'Giant of Africa'

July 16, 2019

Nigeria, which has a population of 190 million people, the largest in Africa, is an economic power that has had the highest GDP in Africa for eight years in a row. Nigeria is also a cultural power, having an internationally famous movie industry known as Nollywood.

Nigeria, popularly called the "Giant of Africa," with its scale and size, is unfortunately plagued with large domestic income disparities. Its commercial capital Lagos and the surrounding area is among the largest metropolitan areas in Africa, but faces many problems including population growth, poverty, security and public health.

In Lagos state, where about 70 percent of residents live in slums, health care services are not ade-quately provided. Through sustained activity including support for an information campaign and community health centers, JICA has provided support for health care in Lagos state. JICA is also working with international agencies and development partners on global problems such as polio eradication and infectious diseases prevention.

JICA is working toward improvements in healthcare in Nigeria, in order to fulfill the "Leave no one behind" commitment in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
