JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka Speaks at the World Assembly for Women 2016, Emphasizes the Need for Continued Support to Achieve Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Developing Countries

Political and business figures and other opinion leaders from around the world were invited to the World Assembly for Women (WAW! 2016) held in Tokyo on Dec. 13-14, 2016. The purpose of the conference was to give international attention to policies to promote an active role for women.

Japanese-Style Education - “Special Activities” /Tokubetsukatsudo(Tokkatsu) - Spreads to Egyptian Elementary Schools

In Japanese elementary schools, students participate in “special activities.” These include cleaning the classroom and being the class leader for a day (nitchoku). These are in addition to lessons on academic subjects. With JICA’s help, Japanese-style special activities are now spreading to the classrooms of Egypt.

JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka visited India (New Delhi and Tamil Nadu) for the first time since taking office in October 2015. He reaffirmed plans to strengthen the special, cooperative relationship with India, which is one of JICA’s biggest ODA recipient countries, possessing the world’s second-largest population and Asia’s third-largest economy.

JICA launches New Initiative to Improve Food and Nutrition in Africa

JICA launched the Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa recently at a side event of the sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), which JICA held in Africa for the first time. IFNA aims to improve nutrition in Africa, with a particular focus on the region south of the Sahara Desert, which is said to have some 220 million malnourished people.

ABE Initiative Intern from Ethiopia Aims to Act as a Bridge Between Japan and His Country

The African Business Education Initiative for Youth (ABE Initiative) aims to train African human resources who will learn Japanese-Style business directly to contribute to Economic development of Africa. JICA is on track to achieve its goal of accepting 900 international students in five years (this program began in 2014) into master's degree courses and internships.

JICA Support for Ethnic Harmony in Bosnia and Herzegovina Ongoing 20 Years After Diplomatic Ties Established

Japan and Bosnia and Herzegovina established diplomatic relations the year after the peace agreement, so this year marks the 20th anniversary of those ties. JICA is carrying out various cooperation projects related to ethnic harmony in the country.
