The 4.8 km long railway bridge is the longest railway bridge in Bangladesh, and Jamuna River is one of the world's most flowing rivers. The bridge is characterized by a large difference in water levels between the wet and dry seasons and flooding every year, so cutting-edge Japanese technology has been adopted to ensuring the future sustainability and reducing maintenance costs of the bridge.

The railway bridge will provide a new gateway between the capital Dhaka and the north-western region of Bangladesh and is expected to contribute to improving the efficiency of rail transport and connectivity with the country and neighboring countries, which will support Bangladesh's economic development.
