[Zimbabwe] Aiming for the Day When an Abundant Country Will Be Fully Revived

August 14, 2019

Zimbabwe is an abundant country blessed with beautiful nature including the famous Victoria Falls, fertile agricultural land, and some of the best mineral resources in the world, including platinum. Beginning in the 2000s, the country received a shock from the confusion brought about by land reform and economic policies, and the first new president in 37 years was elected in Zimbabwe's 2018 presidential election. The new administration is promoting foreign trade to create a more open country and hoping to use its abundant resources to create economic growth.

Through the Project for the Road Improvement of the Northern Part of the North-South Corridor, JICA built a road that is essential to economic activity by Zimbabwe in the southern Africa region, which is in the process of unifying economically. JICA is cooperating also for the social and economic recovery of Zimbabwe, including by working to improve the health care situation by improving medical service quality using the 5S-Kaizen TQM methods and by supporting efforts to improve the livelihoods of farmers by introducing the Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment & Promotion (SHEP) approach.

The SHEP approach aims to improve the livelihoods of farmers by having them grow crops that will sell. Pictured are farmers who receive training from extension officer.
