The eighth meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) of the Project for the Construction of Safe and Resilient Cities against Earthquakes and Tsunami Disasters (PCSR) was held

On March 24, 2021, the 8th Meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee was held in virtual modality with the attendance of 64 participants, including the project executing institutions, the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing (MIDUVI) and the National Management Service of Risks and Emergencies (SNGRE), the pilot cities of the project, the Embassy of Japan in Ecuador, the Office of JICA Ecuador and experts of the project.

SNGRE reported on the general progress of the project, and together with MIDUVI reported on their respective activities by outputs. The Municipal Decentralized Autonomous Government (GAD) of Salinas and GAD of Sucre made presentations as representatives of the primary and secondary pilot cities, respectively. Due to the spread of coronavirus, the project implementation period has been extended and activities are being conducted with the remote support of experts from Japan. Despite the challenging situation, the project has achieved more than 80% progress on the indicators set for each output.

Due to the pandemic, Japanese experts have been forced to leave the country, which has limited local activities, and also has changed the structure and staff of some counterparts, however, we have confirmed in this JCC that each institution each responsible institution strives to achieve the goal by devising ways to deal with the current situation, despite the various challenges they face in the development of their activities.

Meanwhile, in the months of March and April 2021, in the pilot cities the "Workshop on the Tsunami Evacuation Plan (PET) for the municipalities of the Coastal Profile of Ecuador", the "National Seminar for the preparation of the Agendas of Risk Reduction "and the" Workshop of Dissemination and socialization of the Ecuadorian Standard of the Construction and regulation of construction processes " for municipalities throughout the country were conducted.

The objective of this project is that both SNGRE and MIDUVI have a technical support system for local governments, so that they can reduce the damage caused by earthquakes and tsunami in Ecuador, and thus contribute to one of the global objectives of the "Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 ", which seeks to" Substantially increase the number of countries where disaster risk reduction strategies are formulated at the national and local levels by 2020. "We will continue to promote activities while strengthening cooperation between the parties involved in the project and further contribute to the overall objectives.
