Activities in Egypt

Cairo University Pediatric Hospital (CUSPH)

Background and Objective

Photo

The government of Japan supported the construction of Cairo University Pediatric Hospital (CUSPH) and the capacity building of its staff in response to the Egyptian government's initiative to improve the standards of pediatric health care on the occasion of the International Year of Child in 1979.

Since its establishment, the hospital became known as the "Japanese Hospital" by Cairo locals. It has provided advanced medical care services for more than three decades at affordable cost to Egyptian children from all over the country.

However, with the rapid increase of the population in the recent years, public medical care institutions face the pressing issue of inadequate medical equipment, and accommodating space. CUSPH is one of these public facilities that are facing this challenge. Thus, there is a need to enhance the capacity of the hospital's staff to maintain its assets, and to solve the challenge of the limited space to be capable of accommodating the increasing number of patients.

Project Summary

Grant Projects

First Stage: Construction of the hospital (40 million USD)

CUSPH was established in 1982 with grant aid from Japan as a public medical care and educational institution for pediatrics to improve the conditions of maternal and pediatric health care in Egypt.

Second Stage: Expansion of the hospital (29 million USD)

Due to the hospital's limited capacity compared with the increasing number of patients, JICA supported the expansion of the hospital through its second grant project to CUSPH in 1986 – 1988.

Third stage: Renovation of the hospital (13 million USD)

The Egyptian government designed a renovation plan to restore the functions of the entire facility aiming at improving the hospital's capacity and facilities to be able to serve the increasing patients' inflow. Finally, the renovation was implemented through a third wave of grant offered by JICA to this project, which took place in the period of 1995-1996.

Fourth Stage: Extension of the hospital

On the 14th of December 2015, JICA signed a grant agreement with the Egyptian government to provide grant aid of up to 1.56 billion Japanese Yen allocated for the construction of the outpatient facility at CUSPH.

This grant targets constructing an outpatient care facility for internal medicine services at CUSPH and providing its equipment. The project will solve the outpatient crowding at the facility and increase the number of medical examinations that can be performed, aiming at enhancing the outpatient medical care services and strengthening the educational functions of the hospital.

Technical Cooperation

Between 1983 and 2002, JICA has dispatched total 208 Japanese experts (42 long term experts and 166 short term experts) to CUSPH to provide technical advisory and training programs aiming at improving the capacity of CUSPH especially in pediatric medical care, clinical laboratory, intensive care, and operation and maintenance of medical equipment.
