Training in Japan

About JICA Training

The technical training program is part JICA’s technical cooperation assistance approach, which focuses on the promotion of nation-building in developing countries through human resource development. Various training courses in diverse fields are offered in Japan for participants to obtain practical knowledge and technical skills relevant to the development needs of the country. It is expected that upon return to their home country, trainees would apply what they have learned for strengthening their respective organizations for the economic and social development of their countries. Training courses are conducted at 17 training centers located throughout Japan, in cooperation with various universities, research centers, hospitals and other public bodies and institutions which prepare the practical and theory of the training.

Objectives

To promote self-help efforts to advance development through skills and capacity building, while also promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the people of Fiji and Japan.

Background

The Government of Japan began accepting overseas participants for training in Japan under the Colombo Plan Sponsorship Program in 1965. Training courses are offered in consultation with the partner country to meet the needs and requests of the country.

How courses are selected

JICA develops a series of training courses to offer to developing countries. Each year around July-August, JICA Headquarters sends out a course schedule comprised of more than 300 courses to the Fiji Government through the Public Service Commission (PSC).

PSC, in consultation with the line ministries, choose the courses to address personnel training needs, while considering the priority development issues agreed between the Fiji Government and JICA. Training course requests are submitted to the Embassy of Japan and JICA simultaneously. Requests are then sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and JICA HQ for consideration and approval. The deadline for submission of all official requests to JICA is fixed at the end of August.
