JICA is assisting the Nasinu Town Council in clearing the waste in Nasinu area after the aftermath of TC Harold. This collaborative work started on 15th June and is expected to continue for a month. Under this operation, JICA and Council have hired additional trucks and grabbers to hasten the cleanup operation.

The wastes in Narere, Navosai, Makoi, Tuirara, Tovata, Nepani, Muanikoso Housing, Nadawa, Narere Stage 1 and Nadera have been collected. Now the operation team is working at Caubati and Kinoya, followed by Laucala Beach Estate, Caubati Stage 2, New Town, Valelevu and Kalabu. The residents in Nasinu are requested to cooperate in this operation as there are more wastes out on the streets than expected.

In addition, a request is made to all the residents for their kind assistance and cooperation to make the collection service quicker, safer and easier. Firstly, they are requested to follow the Council's waste collection schedule. It has been noted that wastes are on the street even after the collection in some areas. Secondly, they are requested not to mix General Wastes, Green Wastes and White goods when they put the wastes on the streets, to allow for the efficient collection operation. Thirdly, the residents are not permitted to burn the waste in the skip bin for preventing the risk of fire and damage to the skip bins.

As part of the Clean-up operation, the Nasinu Town Council with the assistance of the Ministry of Health is also mounting awareness programs with communities on proper management of waste and disposal. Apart from this, the communities are also provided awareness on prevention of major diseases such as dengue fever, leptospirosis and typhoid.

The clean-up operation assistance is availed under JICA's Technical Cooperation Project Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in Pacific Island Countries (J-PRISM 2) where it enhances proper waste management in the Pacific Region. In Fiji, The Project is being undertaken by the Department of Local Government and all the Councils, with the intent of developing Waste Management Master Plan for each Council, and conducting survey on 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) with Department of Environment. Since 2008, JICA has been assisting Fiji's waste management through several Technical Cooperation Projects. At the same time, more than 30 JICA volunteers have been engaged to improve waste management and Environmental Education at grass roots level.
