On India visit, JICA President Dr. TANAKA Akihiko highlights the important areas of cooperation through JICA funded projects in the country

New Delhi, March 14, 2023: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)'s President, Dr. TANAKA Akihiko visited India from March 8 to14. During his visit, the President conducted meetings with high-ranking government officials and diplomats and highlighted JICA's activities in India as well as its vision for the country. He met Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Hon'ble Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon'ble Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar and G20 Sherpa Mr. Amitabh Kant in Delhi and Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Sinde in Mumbai. Dr. TANAKA also visited JICA project sites in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai including the Projects for Construction of Mumbai - Ahmedabad High Speed Rail, Mumbai Trans Harbor Link Project, Delhi Metro Projects and Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer activity site in Delhi.

Speaking on this occasion, Dr. TANAKA Akihiko, President, Japan International Cooperation Agency, said, "India is the largest partner for JICA. I am pleased to visit India and to see the firm progress of the projects which were under planning stage during my previous JICA presidency. I was honored to have opportunities to meet dignitaries of Government of India including Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. We discussed various areas of India-Japan cooperation which includes large scale infrastructures development, enhancement of people to people cooperation, and cooperation in North East region of India and agreed on further strengthening the partnership. JICA will continue extending supports to Government of India‘s efforts of infrastructure and socio-economic development through financial and technical cooperation projects. I am sure we can contribute to India's socio-economic development and enhanced Japan-India partnership."

Welcoming the President, Mr. SAITO Mitsunori, Chief Representative, JICA India, said, "It gives me great pleasure to welcome Dr. TANAKA Akihiko, President of JICA. We confirmed that the dignitaries he met during the visit have the same understanding on the importance of India-Japan relationship and have high expectations for JICA's activities. We, under the strong leadership of Dr. TANAKA, are ready to respond to the expectations. Under his leadership, JICA has been at the forefront of providing assistance to developing countries in various areas such as infrastructure development, health, education, and disaster relief among others. His vision for JICA is centered around the principles of human security and sustainable development, which aim to empower individuals and communities, while also protecting the environment. We will gear up for further strengthening our cooperation in India."

Before assuming the President's position at JICA in April 2022, Dr. TANAKA was the President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Japan. His career includes being a Professor of International Politics at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, the University of Tokyo (1998-2012, 2015-2017), President of JICA (2012-2015), Executive Vice President of the University of Tokyo (2009-2012), Professor of Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, the University of Tokyo (2000-2012).
