Project Summary Mount Merapi and Progo River Basin:
The objective of this component of the project is to promote the protection of human lives and public and private properties at the foot of Mount Merapi and in the lower Progo River Basin, located about 30 km north of Yogyakarta, by taking measures to prevent mudflows of volcanic debris. Furthermore, installing a sustainable disaster reduction system will also contribute to local community development.
Mount Bawakaraeng:
The objective of this component of the project is to protect human lives, farmland and other public and private properties from mudflows in the Jeneberang River basin, where a landslide occurred due to a major collapse on Mt. Bawakaraeng in South Sulawesi in March 2004. The project consists of rehabilitating the existing infrastructure, including bridges. Its additional objective is to sustain economic and social activities by providing reliable water supply in the provincial capital of Makassar and its surrounding areas.
