Study on Integrated Water Resources Management for Sefidrud River Basin

Background and Objectives

Contrary to rising water demand for agricultural, industrial and domestic use, construction and planning of dams are preceded without integrated water resources management plan in Sefidrud river basin.
Under the circumstances, the study was started with the objectives to formulate a Master Plan for water resources management in Sefidrud river basin and to transfer technology on the integrated water resources management to the counterpart personnel.

Outline of the Study

In the study, present water demand, individual water development plans and water resource potential in each region are studied. Based on this information, future water demand is predicted and water balance is simulated. Furthermore, as a method to coordinate the water conflict, workshops are held in each province on the topics such as the agenda of the stakeholder meetings.
Finally, analyzing these results, the Master Plan for water resources management in Sefidrud river basin is formulated and technology transfer is conducted.

In the Study, Conflict management is employed to coordinate the water conflict. As a part of the management, workshops were held in 7 provinces which are Zanjan, Kordestan, East Azarbaijan, Qazvin, Ardabil, Tehran and Gilan. The objectives of workshops are 1) to identify the background of conflicts on water distribution among the provinces, 2) to make each water users increase the knowledge of other ware users in the provinces to foster confidence among the water users, and 3) to develop the agenda of the stakeholder meetings.
