Environment Management

The Participatory Solid Waste Management in Rural & Urban Areas

Background and Objectives

With respect to the request from the Iranian side Municipality and Rural Management Organization (MRMO) on the Technical Cooperation concerning "The Participatory Solid Waste Management in Rural and Urban Areas" proposed in July 2010, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has agreed to dispatch some Japanese experts to Iran from February 2013 to February 2014 (one year).

The purpose is capacity building of MRMO and relevant organizations for supporting local municipal solid waste management activities through seminar, training course, workshop and consultation programs. The aim of this project is that after the completion of the JICA expert dispatch by the Technical Cooperation, MRMO and relevant organizations will support local municipal solid waste management activities with self-reliant manners.

JICA experts have been dispatched both on short term and long term basis to cooperate in the following fields: solid waste management (long term), waste incineration both mechanical and environmental (short term), Biological Digestion of Organic Waste (short term), landfill technology (short term), and leachate treatment (short term).

  • Implementation period: From February 2013 to February 2014 (One year)
  • Executing Organization: Municipality and Rural Management Organization (MRMO), Ministry of Interior.
  • Counterpart: Mashhad Waste Management Organization of Mashhad Municipality (WMO)

Outline of the Project

The Technical Cooperation activities are essentially divided into two parts, Four Pilot projects in Mashhad Municipality and National Workshops and Seminars organized by the Municipality and Rural Management Organization (MRMO) under the cooperation of Mashhad Municipality. Therefore, the main counterpart for the former activities is the WMO of Mashhad Municipality, while that for the latter is the Municipality & Rural Organization and the WMO of Mashhad Municipality.

The experiences and knowledge obtained from the pilot projects in Mashhad will be utilized to formulate the curriculum of the National Workshops and Seminars.
