Activities in Iraq

New JICA

On October 1, 2008, the new Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was established as a result of a merger of JICA with the overseas economic cooperation operations of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The new JICA also succeeded some of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' grant aid programs, which are offered as part of Japan's Official Development Assistance (ODA).

The new JICA integrates three major types of assistance offered by Japan: technical cooperation, ODA loans, and grant aid. As a result, it became one of the most important comprehensive development assistance institutions in the world.

The new JICA aims at effective and efficient assistance to Iraq to further support the development of social and economic infrastructure that provides the underpinnings of improved living conditions and economic growth, thereby contributing to reconstruction and peace-building in Iraq through medium- and long-term economic stability.
