Project: Inclusion of the Persons with Disabilities into Society

Background and Objective

Under the rule of the Soviet Union, people with disabilities were inhibited from participating and advancing in Kyrgyzstan society. The aim of the project “Inclusion of the Persons with Disabilities into society” is to establish a networking among the persons with disabilities and strengthen their ability, thereby creating a social structure in which they can commit themselves into the society with own will.

Project Summary

In cooperation with the Ministry of Labor and Social Development in charge of social security, leader trainings have been conducted to develop human resources initiating to support the persons with disabilities in the future, and International Central Asian Conference was held to promote cooperation in the region. Also, in December 2008, a resource center for persons with disabilities was opened in the same premise where Ministry of Labor and Social Development is located as a base for supporting them. Since the project started, a trend supporting them has been growing, i.e. Kyrgyzstan disabled-people related organizations have the first time launched network-style non-governmental organizations with their own initiative.

Project Highlights

This project is implemented in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) in Thailand. The APCD has already built a wide-ranging international network, so that the relevant personnel in Kyrgyzstan can become familiar with trends around the world and learn the networking know-how from APCD.
