Activities in Republic of North Macedonia

Introduction of Projects

The Project for Improvement of Water Supply in Inhabited Places in Skopje Outskirts in Republic of North Macedonia

Background of the Project:

In North Macedonia, the rate of population served by public water supply in 2000 was 100% in urban area and 28% in rural area. The number of patients of water-borne disease (typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery and cholera) significantly decreased from 302 patients in 1995 to 113 patients in 2000. Thus, improvement of public hygiene condition through public water supply seems to largely contribute to prevent such waterborne disease. In non-piped-water served areas, water supply is poor condition in quantity and quality, since the shallow wells as their water source for domestic use is prone to be contaminated by waste water, etc.

Under the circumstances, the government of North Macedonia puts high priority on water supply and wastewater treatment sector to improve living conditions and therefore requested grant assistance from Japan. The Government of Japan accepted to provide grant assistance to Macedonian Government and implement the Project for Improvement of Water Supply in Skopje Outskirts.

In the Project areas, the rate of population served of rural municipalities outside Skopje city are from 18 to 78%, on the contrary 85% in Cair municipality in Skopje city. The statistics reveals that there are relatively many cases of water-borne disease in such areas. This implies poor hygienic condition in non-served villages. The delay in providing water supply facilities is remarkable in comparison with the progress in construction of other public infrastructures such as roads and power supply.

In order to improve the water supply situation mentioned above, the Project will set the objective of raising the rate of population served to more than 80% in six municipalities (Cucer Sandevo, Gazi Baba, Ilinden, Petrovec, Studenicani, Zelenikovo) and over 90% in Cair municipality. To achieve this objective, the Project will provide the materials, personnel and fund required for the construction of water supply facilities in villages in Skopje outskirts.
