Project News Volume 36

Periodical monitoring was conducted!

The Project conducted the periodical monitoring for the 2nd batch counties. The Project has conducted a series of SHEP training to county officers for 1 year, then trained officers conduct SHEP activities with farmers. 2 years after the baseline survey, the Project will conduct the periodical data survey (endline survey) but before that the Project conducts the monitoring whether target farmers conduct SHEP activities and what kind of challenges facing which is the periodical monitoring.

When the Project conducted the periodical monitoring for the 1st batch county, requested all extension officers to present for the progress of target farmer groups by sharing detailed questionnaire in advance. In this monitoring for the 2nd batch counties, the Project simplified the questionnaire and confirm the progress of SHEP activities, impact and challenges. Also, the Project asked Sub County Agriculture Officers (SCAOs) to present by compiling all information of groups in sub county, which led to minimize the presentation time and secure more time for participants to discuss and share information.

By taking this opportunity, the Project also collected information on the progress of upscaling (SHEP implementation by county resources). In Nyamira, there is a group which has completed upscaling activities from SHEP Step 1 to Step 4. The extension officer who is responsible for this group shared tips for implementing upscaling as follows: 1) approach farmers with a positive attitude, 2) keep to the promised time (if you're late, farmers will be busy and won't participate); 3) clearly convey the message what you want to tell within 1 to 2 hours (it is difficult to restrain farmers for long periods of time), and 4) listen to farmers' voices rather than speaking unilaterally and encourage farmers to participate in activities. Hearing the tips for agricultural extension based on the experience of extension officers directly was a great learning experience for other extension officers and the Project as well.
