After-story of the Clinical Nurse Teacher Development Training -Before and After of the clinical practice at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital-

In this project, we provided training to develop Master Trainers (MTs) and Clinical Nurse Teachers (CNTs) at target hospitals with the aim of improving the quality of nursing students' practical training and the development of nurses' skills. *1 Let’s see how the clinical practice changed.

B.Sc. 3rd year students (Total 100) of College of Nursing Sher-E Bangla Nagar (CONSBN) have been sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital (ShSMCH) to conduct the clinical placement under their Adult Medical and Surgical Nursing Subject.
We interviewed the Nursing superintendent of ShSMCH and nursing students from CONSBN.

Interview to Ms. Shahnawaz Parveen, Nursing Superintendent of the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital (ShSMCH)

As a part of their practice, students conducted educational presentations. What do you feel when you look at the students’ demonstration?
I am very much proud of the improved students’ clinical practice in the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Previously, student nurses were not well facilitated in their clinical practice, and there was no provision of Clinical Nurse Teachers (CNT) in the hospital to support and supervise the students.
I have observed clinical practice and found that B.Sc. in nursing students showed interest in their clinical practice and bedside learning through performing the fundamental nursing skills.

Is there any favorable change among the nurses on responsibility, initiative, and motivation for the clinical practice since the Project started?
After implementing the CBNS-II project plan in the hospital and developing CNTs, senior staff nurses have been demonstrating their responsibilities during their nursing skills performance.

Please tell us about your ambition in the future as a nursing superintendent.
I intend to change the professional field in the future by ensuring quality student nurses’ clinical practice and patient care, which will make the patients satisfied with nursing care. Also, I want to stay with the patients and nursing professions to serve the people.
My Challenges are: (1) Development of nursing knowledge, (2) Nurse oriented profession, and (3) Develop CNT furthermore.

Interview to B.Sc. 3rd year students from the College of Nursing Sher-E Bangla Nagar (CONSBN)

Do you feel the clinical practice has been better than before?
Ms. Rifa Rubayet: This time, we found a different working environment from the one we faced during their 1st-year clinical placement. Previously students only did medication. But now we are getting the floor to show our creativity. During our current placement, students got the opportunity to do poster presentations in front of patients and attendance, which we did not do in our previous clinical practices. I also learnt how to do therapeutic communication to build rapport with patients and how to take histories from subjective and objective data.
Mr. Souvik Baksi: To prepare this presentation (for dengue fever), we had to study a lot, but we could deepen our knowledge. I felt happy to implement our theoretical knowledge into clinical practice, which was not possible before. Moreover, the support we got from the Master Trainers and Nursing Superintendent is remarkable. Senior Nurses support motivated students more to provide quality nursing care to the patient.
Mr. Liton Hossain: Student Nurses usually try to fulfil the objectives as part of their daily activities. Previously, we followed the daily activities sheet to develop our skills. However, it is being followed less in this current clinical placement.

Please tell us the good experiences and difficulties in the clinical practice:
Mr. Shouvik Baksi: I personally learned the discharge and admission procedure, file reading process and accurate documentation, which are supposed to be learnt in the first year of our education. I felt more confident to assist my senior nurses and respond to patients.
Ms. Rifa Rubayat: My good experience regarding patient’s feedback is that patients were so happy to get students sincere care and blessed student nurses after getting discharged.
Mr. Liton Hossain: CNTs and the ward in-charge showed more responsibility to teach student nurses. If I asked any questions to my seniors, they answered patiently, although there was a huge patient load.
Students: Students faced difficulties in applying nursing care because there was resource scarcity, like 10cc syringe, Surgical tape, cannula not sufficient. Patients had to buy these things.
Another concern is that there was no blood pressure (BP) machine for nurses in the dengue ward. For that, we could not measure patients’ BP; only doctors measured the BP of the patient. In case of emergency, it was difficult to know patients’ condition without measuring their BP.
