Disaster Waste Management seminar (May 23, 2025)
J-PRISM3 held an online mini seminar on disaster waste management on May 23, 2025. It aims to contribute to disaster waste management efforts in Pacific Island Countries.
On December 17, 2024, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, and disaster waste management has become an urgent issue in the country. For recovery and reconstruction from the disaster, the demolition of damaged buildings, as well as the removal, treatment, and disposal of disaster waste from affected areas is still ongoing. In the process of disaster waste management, hazardous waste such as asbestos-containing materials needs to be managed properly. In the seminar, the J-PRISM3 shared reference information, including disaster waste management efforts in Japan and other countries, preliminary survey findings in Vanuatu, and related recommendations.
The seminar featured three presentations.
- Outline of Disaster Waste Management in Japan: Japan’s guideline and plan for disaster waste management, procedures after the disaster, etc.
- Practice in the Management of Hazardous Waste Materials, Including Asbestos: Handling and management of hazardous waste focusing on asbestos-containing materials, references (including the case of Japan and other countries)
- The Earthquake Disaster Waste Management Information and the Draft Disaster Waste Management Guideline: The findings from the preliminary survey conducted by J-PRISM3, key issues, recommended measures, development of a national demolition and construction waste management guideline, etc.
A total of 22 participants including the project counterparts from Vanuatu, FSM, RMI, and Tonga attended the seminar. In the Pacific region, many countries face a relatively high risk of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and cyclones. J-PRISM3 will continue to support recovery and reconstruction efforts in Vanuatu in terms of disaster waste management and enhancing the preparedness for disaster waste in other countries.
