Workshop on Public Awareness and New Solid Waste Management Standardized Reporting Format
J-PRISM3 held the above workshop at Nadi Town Council on 17th February, 2026.
The workshop was organized for staff from municipal councils (Councils) across Fiji to support the country’s ongoing efforts in solid waste management,
During the workshop, participants received explanations and engaged in discussions on the following two topics:
- 1 . A new standardized reporting format for solid waste management data that can be used across all Councils in Fiji
- 2 . Public awareness activities, particularly school-based environmental education under the Clean School Program (CSP)
The improvement and management of solid waste data is one of the activities undertaken under J-PRISM3. Through the introduction of the new reporting format, all Councils will be able to collect and manage data in a consistent manner, including:
- the amount of waste collected,
- the volume of waste transported to final disposal sites, and
- the quantity of recyclable materials collected.
This standardized approach is expected to lead to more unified and reliable national waste statistics for Fiji and contribute to improving the country’s overall data management system.
Regarding public awareness (mainly on environmental education in schools), it contributes to the promotion of 3R+Return*, which J-PRISM3 sets as one of the project outputs. JICA previously supported the launch of the Clean School Program (CSP) within Councils. The CSP involves lecturing children at schools about waste and the environment in general, while also engaging the entire school in environmental conservation activities throughout the year, such as 3R activities and composting. However, the program was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and some Councils remain inactive even now. Therefore, for effectively restarting and promoting the CSP in all Councils, the sessions this time were organized for information sharing, including experiences and insights from Councils that have restarted the CSP, and for developing action programs by each Council. Additionally, Councils presented practical initiatives for community public awareness on waste management.
On the day, a total of 29 participants attended from the Ministry of Local Government, the Ministry of Education, and all Councils. The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for Fiji to share a common understanding and learn mutually.
* 3R means Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Return means returning valuable materials after consumption to countries capable of processing them for recycling.
