Background

photo

The Cajamarca region is located in a mountainous area with the fourth highest poverty index in Peru. Seventy-nine percent of the population lack access to safe water, and due to poor sanitary conditions, the chronic malnutrition rate among children under five is 43 percent. In light of these conditions, the regional government devised the 2005 to 2015 Cajamarca Food and Nutrition Security Strategy, which gives priority to improve the mother and child mortality rate, chronic malnutrition and sanitary conditions.

The objective of this project is to reduce the malnutrition rate among infants under three by improving expectant mothers’ nutritional intake and providing instruction in breastfeeding and weaning to nursing mothers.

To ensure the long-term success of this project in the target area, personnel and organizational capabilities are being enhanced at agencies involved in providing instruction and monitoring, while systems are being set up and personnel are trained to maintain the efforts for nutritional improvement.
