Background

On August 15, 2007, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Peru’s Ica region along the Pacific Coast. The earth quake caused close to six hundred fatalities and two thousand or more injuries in Ica and the southern part of Lima region, as well as wiping out upwards of 52 thousand homes and damaging another 23 thousand homes. After the earthquake, JICA dispatched a study group for rebuilding and recovery needs between September 13 and October 8 of 2007 at the behest of the Peruvian government. The study showed that rebuilding homes with earthquake resistance is one of the critical needs facing the quake area.

Summary and Objective

The objective of the project is to promote rebuilding earthquake-resistant homes to prevent similar damages from earthquake in the future. Specifically, a housing recovery plan (tentative) was drafted, and the effectiveness and the practicability of its measures formulated in the plan were examined under pilot projects, and others. At the same time, those activities initiate technical transfers for the staff at the relevant ministries and agencies involved in homebuilding.
