Exchange Program Between University of the Philippines and Kansai University

An exchange program between students of the Japanese Class of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Department of Linguistics and students from Kansai University was held last July 7, 2003 at the JICA-Net Satellite Center. Information on culture and daily life from both parties were the main topics of exchange.

Broadband for Development

1. Theme
(1) Introduction of "Asia Broadband Program"
It is highly recognized that broadband will be one of the key infrastructures for economic development in the Asian region in the 21st century. In the session, the "Asia Broadband Program," which Japan has recently announced as an action plan to promote establishment of broadband platforms in Asian region was introduced and advantages of broadband usage and importance of promotion of broadband in the region was discussed.

(2) Introduction of "ICT Policies in Japan"
It is recognized that the utilization of ICT has a beneficial effect on accelerating the development. In the session, participants were introduced to the "ICT policies in Japan," which enabled the advanced ICT usage and its current implementing status.

(3) Introduction of "Japan's ODA in ICT Field"
In the session, Japan's ODA/OOF scheme for ICT development through overview of some examples of ODA projects and the current situation of the "comprehensive co-operation package," which was announced by Japan to bridge international digital divide at the G8 Leaders' "Kyushu-Okinawa Summit Meeting" in July 2000 was discussed.

Friendship Meeting between Filipino and Japanese High School Students (May 15)

Through JICA-Net's video conferencing, a group of Filipino High School students from Metro Manila were given the chance to meet with a group of High School students from Tokyo, Japan. To make the cultural exchange experience more enjoyable and rewarding a group workshop was held prior to the video conference meeting, where the students made some art, poetry, and stories which they later shared to their would-be Japanese friends.
The students were pleasantly surprised to find out how different school life is in the other's country, yet how similar their experiences are still. The students left the meeting with a sense of fulfillment from an experience they will not easily soon forget.

Training of Parole and Probation Authoritity (PPA) by UNAFEI through JICA-Net

The participants from PPA, composed of parole officers and supervisors, learned much on Japan's success in parole program volunteerism through a remote lecture conducted through video conferencing from UNAFEI experts and volunteers, a film showing on sample successful volunteer parole programs, and group workshop sessions. The PPA participants also benefited from the interaction with VPO's from Japan.
This was also the first time JICA-Net employed the use of real time interpreters to translate between Nihongo and English.

Training in PC Technology and Internet of Filipino High School Students

A group of high school students from Quirino High School, New Era High School, and Quezon City High School, were given the opportunity to join a training on how to use the internet, e-mail, and other PC technologies. The students were very happy to learn the new technology and how they could use the Internet to do school work and e-mail to communicate with friends.

The Filipino students also enjoyed the interaction with the junior high school students from Japan. They were very interested in learning how students like themselves spend their days in school, and how they spend their leisure times, what hobbies and games they play, what food they eat, and what gadgets and toys they have.
