Project News Volume 9

Sensitization for farmer group representatives and extension workers was held!

From 21st to 25th June 2021, a sensitization was held in Kitui and Makeni County for farmer group representatives and extension workers. The project has been explained the outline of the project to the CECs and officers, and the target sub-counties and farmer groups for the project have been selected. Two sub-counties for each county were selected as target sub-county, and each county selected 10 farmer groups, so a total of 100 groups, more than 2,000 farmers will be trained in 2021-22 as the project 1st batch 10 counties. This sensitization is the first activity to be conducted with farmers.

In the sensitization, the project firstly overviewed the SHEP history and the SHEP approach. The project also explained that the project will develop capacity of human resources through trainings and will not provide agricultural materials or allowances. In addition, as a useful tool for farmer group management, the project introduced member lists, activity schedules, harvest records, etc.

In this activity, the project tried to involve farmers by appointing a timekeeper to the farmer and played a video clip on SHEP during the waiting time so that the farmer can be interested and actively participate as much as possible. These ideas were proposed by experienced project counterparts.

Through the sensitization, farmers seemed to understand the project and expect higher incomes through SHEP Approach. Next, a baseline survey will be conducted to collect information on farmers' income and yield!
