About the Volunteer program JICA Volunteer program launched in 1965 and over 50,000 volunteers have been sent to around 90 countries up to now. In Serbia, the first SV (senior volunteer) was sent in 2010 and the first JOCV (younger volunteer) was sent in 2018. As summarized by the phrase "together with the local community", JICA volunteers live and work together with the communities in the country in which they were sent, and carry out activities with an emphasis on raising self-reliant efforts while fostering mutual understanding. Serbia is currently the only country in Europe where JICA volunteers are sent. Over 18 volunteers have been sent to Serbia in the following areas:

Japanese language education, support for people with disabilities, disaster management, tourism, food processing, nurse, KENDO, business management.

Technical Cooperation Project related to JICA Volunteer Program aims at cooperating in the economic and social development, as well as in the reconstruction of developing countries.

Senior Volunteer Program in Serbia started in 2008 and since then several volunteers have been dispatched. There are currently two volunteers in following institutions/organizations:
  • "Nasa Kuca" (Association for support for people with disabilities): Senior volunteer works on a program aimed at the development and education of people with disabilities.
  • Philological Gymnasium in Belgrade: Senior volunteer helps pupils to learn Japanese language and culture. This high school in Belgrade is one of two high schools in Serbia where the Japanese language is taught.
The Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer Program started in 2019 when the first volunteer has been dispatched to Sports Association for the Challenged in Belgrade.

From July 2019, three more volunteers started their assignment in the following institutions:
  • Municipality of Ub (Disaster management department): Volunteer who was engaged in rescue activities as a firefighter in disaster sites in Japan, transfers knowledge to members of the civil protection department. Additionally, the volunteer will work in preparation for practical exercises for children in schools and kindergartens.
  • Municipality of Kraljevo (Disaster management department): As a member of the Japan Disaster Relief Team of Japan International Cooperation Agency, a volunteer helps the local government by presenting experience gained in Emergency Rescue Unit in Japan.
  • School with a dormitory for students with hearing and speech impairments "11th May" in Jagodina. Volunteer transfer knowledge and experience from Japan in working with children with different disabilities (mostly children with autism).
Almost all volunteers are assigned for a period of two years.
