The conflict between anti-government protestors and the security authorities that began in March 2011 has developed into a civil war, and as of July 2012, Japanese citizens are still instructed not to enter Syria by the Japanese government. Amid these circumstances, JICA has been providing remote guidance on local activities for the technical cooperation that was being carried out when the disturbance broke out, with a focus on the humanitarian fields such as water resource management, maternal and child health, and assistance for the people with disabilities.
