The Handover Ceremony of Laboratory and Cold Chain Equipment for Strengthening the National Laboratory System and Infectious Diseases Institute, under JICA Technical Cooperation Projects in Responding to COVID-19, from the Government of Japan, procured by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

On 13 June 2022, H.E. Mr. NASHIDA Kazuya, Japan's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand, and Mr. MORITA Takahiro, Chief Representative, JICA Thailand Office, together with H.E. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, Dr. Kiattipoom Wongrajit, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, and Mrs. Ureerat Chareontoh, Director-General, Thailand International Cooperation Agency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presided over the handover ceremony of Laboratory and Cold Chain Equipment for strengthening Thailand's National Laboratory System and Infectious Diseases Institute under JICA Technical Cooperation Projects in responding to COVID-19, at Chainat Narenthorn, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand.

In 2021, in partnership with the Government of Japan, JICA adopted 2 Technical Cooperation Projects with the Ministry of Public Health, commencing on September 7, 2021 with the signing of a Record of Discussion with the Department of Medical Sciences (DMSc) on "The Project for Strengthening National Laboratory System in Responding to COVID-19" for National Institute of Health (NIH), and "The Project for Capacity Building of Infectious Disease Institute in Responding to COVID-19" with Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute (BIDI), Department of Disease Control (DDC).

Since then, the said projects have successfully delivered 55 items of advanced laboratory equipment, including Genetic Analyzer, Real-time PCR, GeneXpert, Auto-clave, Incubator, Biosafety Cabinet, Bio-informatic and specimen handling tools including reagents. Moreover, these Projects have also provided 87 items of cold-chain storage and temperature monitoring devices to both the NIH and regional branches in Udonthani and Phuket and BIDI, to promote research for strengthening virus surveillance and public testing capabilities with one renovation Biosafety Level-2 enhanced for Excellent Training Center in Medical Sciences at NIH. This technical assistance, providing equipment procured by JICA Thailand Office to NIH and BIDI valued at approximately JPY 315 million (USD 2.47 million) from the people of Japan, will support Thailand's responsiveness and preparedness against COVID-19.
