About JICA Tokyo

The official name of JICA Tokyo is the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Tokyo Center. JICA Tokyo is the largest of the eleven JICA centers established throughout the country, and serves as the central contact point and activity hub for the four prefectures of the Kanto region (Tokyo, Gunma, Saitama, and Chiba) as well as Niigata. JICA Tokyo coordinates various stakeholders (local governments, universities, educational institutions, NGOs/NPOs, companies, economic organization and so on) as it carries out a variety of activities.

Knowledge Co-Creation Programs

This is a type of Japanese technical cooperation where training participants from developing countries are invited to mainly Japan to receive support for resolving a variety of issues. The program also values developing a better understanding and a fondness of Japan, and fostering positive interactions with members of Japanese organizations, groups, and citizens, who assist training in Japan.

History

  • September 1964The Tokyo Center is established on the site of the current JICA Ogata Research Institute (located in Ichigaya, Honmura-cho, Shinjuku-ku).
  • June 1985The Tokyo Center is newly established at its current site
  • May 1999Facilities are expanded with a new annex.
  • May 2001The center takes on the duties of the Kanto Branch following its shutdown.
  • October 2003JICA becomes an Independent Administrative Institution.
  • April 2014Organizational restructuring puts the center in charge of regional collaboration, NGO partnership, and volunteer dispatch program in five prefectures, primarily the Kanto area.
  • October 2018Organizational restructuring puts the center in charge of regional collaboration of Nagano Prefecture
