JICA volunteers live and work with local people, speak the same local languages, and promote mutual understanding, all with the purpose of encouraging self-help efforts in the community. They tackle national issues such as poverty, healthcare, and educational concerns, working on the grassroots level with the aim of furthering economic and social development.

Survey on Gunma JOCV returnees
In FY2011, Volunteer technical advisor Yoshie Mori of Gunma University and the JICA Gunma Desk surveyed Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers after they had returned home to Gunma in order to find out how they were putting their volunteer experiences to work and how their careers were developing.
