Activities in Turkey

Flatfish Culture Project

Background and Objective

Since 1997, JICA has provided cooperation toward establishing aquaculture technology in Turkey to raise Black Sea turbot, and the results of the efforts include the transfer of fish seed production technology and setting up a fish disease control system. This project will build on these successes, moving onto the final stage of this initiative with the goal of providing guidance in aquaculture technology—particularly with feed development and facility management—and marketing as well as creating a system to spread Black Sea turbot aquaculture.

Project Description

The main focus areas of this project are aquaculture technology, feed development, and marine economics and marketing, with the aim of establishing aquaculture technology that will spread to private sector companies in Turkey. To that end, JICA is working with the Mediterranean Fisheries Research, Production and Training Institute, an organization under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs that is located in Beymelek, south of Antalya.
