14th Student-Centered Online Training Program Held for the Commemoration of the Disasters of 2011

JICA Turkey Office and Turkish Japanese Foundation initiated Online Student-Centered Training Program titled "Voices of Students" on 5 May 2020. This Program aims to raise awareness on disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction as well as to have cultural exchange among Turkish and Japanese students even under the pandemic. So far, 13 seminars have been realized under this Program including eight times between Turkish and Japanese students and 5 times for Turkish students and students from both countries have actively participated. The 14th seminar was held on 20 March 2021 together with the students of Tagajo High School in Miyagi province of Japan (the second high school in Japan with a Disaster department where the Department of Disaster Science was established in 2016) and Van Erciş Tenzile Ana Secondary School. As is well known, 11 March 2021 marks 10 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake followed by a tsunami disaster in the northeast of Japan, and the devastating earthquake occurred in Van on October 23 in the same year. On the 10th anniversary of these disasters, the students who experienced disasters in 2011 commemorated these disasters and exchanged ideas about disaster education practices as well as cultural exchange with their online presentations. Japanese Ambassador to Turkey H.E. Mr. SUZUKI Kazuhiro, Chief Representative of JICA Turkey Office Mr. IKURO Nobuhiro, the Turkish Japanese Foundation Chairman Prof. Dr. Nejat Bora SAYAN, Principal of Tagajo High School Mr. GORAI Ikuto, Principal of Tenzile Ana Secondary School Mr. Resul GEZICI and Assoc. Prof. Dr. ODA Takashi joined this online seminar, and they underlined the commemoration event that made a significant contribution to the awareness of students from both countries on disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction.
