JICA Seminar for NPOs/NGOs Working in Community Resilience Held Online

JICA's online seminar of "Experience Sharing of Japanese NPOs/NGOs' Activity in Disaster Risk Reduction for Community Resilience" was held on January 19, 2022 for Turkish NGOs working in the area of Disasters.

In the seminar, two representatives from Japanese NGOs/NPOs shared their experiences with Turkish Colleagues. Mr. Kurita, chairperson of Japan Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (JVOAD), provided with historical and legislative background of the volunteer activities related to disasters. He also gave information about cooperation of NGOs/NPOS with local administration, private companies, communities, etc. in Japan. He mentioned that due to the needs of coordination among NGOs/NPOs and with administrative bodies, JVOAD was established in 2016 just before the Kumamoto Earthquake so that they served appropriate services for victim through effective coordination among social welfare councils, volunteer centers, the communities and volunteers.

Mr. Komatsu, Secretary-General of Shapla Neer, reported examples of specific projects regarding the promotion of community disaster prevention in Bangladesh. Shapla Neer introduced to the local governments, citizens and private organizations the three aspects of self-help, mutual help, and public assistance. With their efforts, many villagers saved themselves due to the increased public awareness against cyclone disaster.

In the seminar, JICA Turkey Office's senior representative Mr. Yamazaki mentioned that volunteers take essential role to support the community before and after a disaster. He also underlined strong ties between Turkey and Japan that they helped each other in 1999 Marmara, 2011 Tohoku and Van earthquakes.

The seminar ended with responses to the questions from the participants. The experts emphasized that volunteer organizations need for making routine practice, drills, community meeting as well as training programs for future operations.

JICA Turkey Office will continue to contribute to supporting the strengthening of disaster risk reduction and resilience of the cities of Turkey and the improvement of disaster awareness among citizens.
