Global Handwashing Day Event in Luweero District

October 15 is the day designated by UNICEF as Global Handwashing Day (GHWD), and every year, activities are conducted in different countries to commemorate this day. In Uganda, this year, Rotary Club of Kampala, and JICA co-sponsored the GHWD in rural area of Luweero district in partnership with the district leadership. I participated in the event as late in October I am going to be dispatched to Zirobwe in the district as JICA volunteer in community development.

JICA is currently implementing the "Project for Strengthening Community Health System Through Village COVID Task Forces in Uganda", targeting at Amuru, Busia, Mukono, and Ngora districts, with focusing on strengthening health services at the community level and raising awareness among local residents. Luweero district, which is not however covered under the project, has expressed the desire to learn from the target districts to strengthen its own health sector at the community level; thus, this event was organized.

The main purpose of this event was to remind the participants including; the local residents, Community Health Workers (CHWs) of the area, and members of the Village Health Teams (VHTs) about the importance of washing hands especially during this COVID-19 Pandemic era, and later spread the same knowledge to the wider community. The event began with a hand-washing demonstration, followed by speeches by community leaders, medical doctors, District Health Officials, and others to remind participants of the importance of handwashing. In addition, participants were entertained through singing.

It is surely important for each participant to know the importance of handwashing through the event. In the meantime, I thought that the event was a good opportunity to lead to raising the community awareness of the residents; as such, "we have as good hygiene as we can organize such a practical event."

This is the first time I have ever joined in such an event since I came to Uganda and I realized the importance of "community" in rural areas of Uganda. From now on, I will work together with farmers in my assigned areas as a rice extension worker; through the event, I became strongly aware of the significance of well understanding of the communities to which the farmers belong in undertaking activities.
