Da Nang City Development Master Plan Study

Project Term: June 2008 to June 2010
Executing Agencies: Da Nang People’s Committee

Summary

Da Nang is the largest city in central Vietnam. Possessing an international airport and port, it is the Eastern gateway of the East-West Economic Corridor linking Vietnam to Myanmar. The city boasts five industrial parks, and foreign direct investment is expanding on a large-scale. It is further blessed by three World Heritage sites around the city that serve as resources for tourism.

However, Da Nang’s per capita gross domestic product remained at about 60 percent of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh as of 2006, and wide economic disparities remain between Da Nang and the latter cities. The expectation is that Da Nang will capitalize on the strength of its location and continue to grow as a driving force of central Vietnam’s economy.

Considering these circumstances, the government of Vietnam requested the government of Japan for assistance in preparing an overall strategic plan for the development of Da Nang that balances industry, sightseeing, commerce and populace.

In this regards, JICA began this project to devise a local strategy for developing Da Nang and its surrounding areas. The Study’s outputs include a master plan for the development of Da Nang through 2025, an urban traffic program and an overall environmental sustainability program, proper strategies for tourism development as well as an implementation plan through 2015. To assist urban planning, an urban database will be maintained and training be provided for relevant agency personnel to improve their administrative capabilities.

It is expected that this study will enable Da Nang City as the economic nucleus of Vietnam’s central region to achieve sustainable development that includes considerations for the environment.
