JICA Activities in Yemen (as of March 2010)

Health for Mothers and Children

The level of health indicators for Yemen shows that people in Yemen are in serious health situation :Infant mortality rate 76/1,000 live births , maternal mortality rate 430/100,000 Iive births , and 53 % of 5-year children suffering under-nutrition. The current issue of food crisis would contribute to deteriorating nutrition status of Yemeni people, particularly women and children. Japan is now supporting the improvement of health for mothers and children through the following projects and programs:


Technical Cooperation Project "Community Nutrition and Health for Mothers and Children" (2009-2013)

This project aims to enhance the status of nutrition and health for mothers and children through the activities of community.
In this project, the community health volunteer system, in which female health volunteers from communities are trained to deliver services to women in their communities, such as growth monitoring of infants, provision of nutrition education to mothers, distribution of medical supply, would be established under the collaboration with local health administration office and local community, in order to enhance women's accessibility to health service in remote areas in the Governorate of Sana'a, Ibb, Hadramout.


Country-Focused Training "Medical Equipment Management" (Japan / 2009-2011)

This training aims to enhance the capacity of engineers in Ministry of Public Health and Population to ensure proper management of medical equipment in public health facilities. Especially, it supports to establish "medical equipment management system" which includes regular inspection of the equipment and economical way of equipment updating, and " human resource development system" through fostering master trainers and formulation of training plans.
