The food security is one of the most serious problems in Yemen; 21.8 % of households are facing food insecurity, and approximately 80 % of cereals for staple food are dependent on import. JICA is supporting the enhancement of productivity of cereal crops through provision of agricultural machinery. At the same time, JICA supports the introduction of modern irrigation technology as a countermeasure to overcome the problems of scarcity of water.

Grant Assistance for Underprivileged Farmers (2KR) (Since 1979)

This project provides agricultural machinery, e.g. tractors, in order to secure staple food through agricultural development. The machinery is sold for marginalized farmers and public rural associations with cheep price. The money generated from the sales of the machinery is accumulated as counterpart fund and utilized for the development of agriculture sectors, for instance, the construction of irrigation facilities and agricultural extension center.

Third Country Training "Efficient water use for Irrigation" (Jordan/2009‐2011)

The training composes three courses as high efficiency irrigation technologies, water harvesting and spate irrigation, and communication skill for extension. The training will be conducted three times at 2009,2010 and 2011. These courses target engineers and specialists from the sectors of irrigation and water resource management.
