JICA Volunteer Program

JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) are back in Sri Lanka!

These two JICA volunteers are dispatched on August 12, 2021, to Sri Lanka for the first time in two years and four months since the dispatch has been suspended after Easter Sunday Attack on April 21st 2019 and COVID-19 pandemic. And we are also happy to announce this since this year marks the 40th anniversary of the dispatch of the JOCV to Sri Lanka.

Even under the current difficult circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the host organizations where they are assigned are welcoming them very warmly. This tells that the Sri Lankan people have been also looking forward to the resumption of the dispatch, which is believed to be coming from the contribution that has been made by the 1,149 JOCV members who have served throughout Sri Lanka since the program began in 1981.

Two new JOCVs are working in the field of baseball and music in Colombo. Currently, they are carrying out their activities by online with the best possible infection control measures. This requires a different approach from the usual activities such as utilizing on-line training method like in one of the pics attached, but we hope that they will think together with the local people, and that they will be proactive in working towards the further goodwill and development of the two countries!
