Urban Building Safety Project (UBSP) – BD-P84

Project Summary

Objective:

To strengthen the building safety in Dhaka Metropolitan Area and Chittagong City by financing loans for retrofitting, rebuilding and relocation for private buildings through Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs) and by improving the building safety for public buildings, thereby contributing to improvement of the social vulnerability of urban cities

Component:
The project consists of two components:

Component 1: Will provide two-step loans for promoting the earthquake-resilience of private buildings including RMG factories using sub-loans from participating financial institutions that originate with the Ministry of Finance,
Component 2: Will retrofit public buildings such fire stations, hospitals etc. for earthquakes-resilience, and focusing to reduce social vulnerabilities by mitigate damage when a disaster strikes.

The specific activities are:

  1. mid- to long-term loans to the private sector, including garment factories for retrofitting, rebuilding, relocation
  2. construction of a Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters
  3. the retrofitting of fire stations, to the procurement of equipment
  4. Consulting services.
