Project of Establishment of Implementation System for Sustainable Rural Development in Dominican Republic

Background and Objective

In the Dominican Republic, a priority needs to be given to development in the border area, where the lower social-economic strata of residents are concentrated. The objective of this development study is to formulate a development strategy as the basic policy for development in the border region, and to promote the required capacity for development.

  • Project Period: 2006-2008 (2 years)
  • Planned Amount: 206 million yen
  • Executing Agencies: State Secretary of Economy, Planning and Development (SEEPyD), General Directorate for Border Development (DGDF)

Project Summary

Under the development study, seven provinces in the border region were targeted for a capacity development demonstration study to examine an information system to share development needs and the human resources. The results of the study and the development needs of the region were used as a basis to formulate a development master plan.

Project Highlights

With a vision of “comprehensive and sustainable development for prosperity and fortune,” a plan with the following five strategies was formulated:

1. Maximizing use of the border market
2. Sharing priorities with Haiti
3. Conserving the environment for eco-tourism
4. Forming core cities and developing integrated rural villages
5. Strengthening production capacity aiming for economically independent communities
