Activities in Dominican Republic

Project for the Improvement of Teaching Methods in Mathematics

Background and Objective

photo

The Dominican Republic has been noted as lacking adequate basic academic skills, particularly arithmetic, in its elementary education curriculum. The objective of the Project for the Improvement of Teaching Methods in Mathematics (PROMETAM) is to develop a teacher’s handbook for mathematics and a manual for working with children appropriate to the curriculum and schools in the Dominican Republic. This is being done by revising the elementary mathematics education materials developed under PROMETAM in Honduras and by educating core personnel through processes for revision.

Project Summary

Under PROMETAM, the capacity for arithmetic education (including creating teaching materials, training and monitoring) is being boosted, and a teacher’s handbook for mathematics and a manual for working with children suited for the Dominican Republic have been drafted. The teaching materials are being used in the classroom with observations and interviews to provide feedback to improve the materials.
